Bribery & Corruption - Carribean
Working for lawyers acting for a foreign government, which was defending allegations of bid rigging and bribery and corruption in respect of a $200m oil exploration contract.
One of the (failed) bidders for the contract, an American firm, alleged that the bidding process was rigged and that it had been asked to pay bribes to government officials to secure the contract. These allegations were strongly rejected by the government and its lawyers and the dispute went to international arbitration.
Working for the government, the complicated bidding process was examined. Documents were forensically examined and government officials up to ministerial level were interviewed, along with lawyers, accountants and state employees involved in the tendering process.
The investigation’s findings were submitted to the government’s lawyers and the case was subsequently settled at international arbitration in the government’s favour.
